Nothing Phones get a major upgrade: discreet call recording now possible

Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, announced via X (formerly Twitter) a new discreet call recording feature for Nothing phones. This feature, available through a new recorder widget, allows users of the Nothing Phone 1, Phone 2, and the new Phone 2a to record phone calls without notifying the other parties.

Prior to this update, Nothing phones relied on the default Google dialer app for call recording. This meant that whenever a user wanted to record a call, the Google dialer would automatically play an announcement informing both parties that the conversation was being recorded. This not only disrupted the call flow but also rendered the recording unusable in situations where secrecy was essential. Nothing’s new recorder widget solves this problem by offering a discreet call recording option that bypasses the standard notification entirely.

Pei explained that the feature is a direct response to high user demand. He acknowledges the potential for misuse, but states that it’s designed to protect users in situations where recording a conversation could be crucial.

Additionally, Pei confirmed that Nothing is working on an overhaul of the notifications panel on its phones, although details about the changes are still under wraps.
