Nothing Phone 3a series receive camera and Essential Space enhancements

Nothing has released a new software update, Nothing OS 3.1, for its recently launched Phone 3a and 3a Pro models, introducing significant enhancements to the devices’ camera capabilities and Essential Space functionality. This update marks a continuation of Nothing’s commitment to refining its user experience and expanding the features of its devices.

A key highlight of the update is the integration of the Essential Key with the camera application. Users can now utilize the physical Essential Key to directly capture and save photos to their Essential Space. This feature allows for the addition of written or voice notes to photos, providing a convenient way to document and recall specific moments.

Specifically, pressing the Essential Key within the camera app captures a photo and saves it directly to the Essential Space. A long press of the key enables users to record and attach voice memos to the captured image.

In addition to the Essential Key enhancements, the update brings a series of camera improvements to both the Phone 3a and 3a Pro. These improvements include more intuitive zoom interactions, enhanced white balance for rear cameras, improved clarity and tone for portraits in backlit conditions, and increased camera responsiveness. Furthermore, the update addresses a reported issue with reddish skin tones in front-facing camera selfies. The Phone 3a Pro also receives a specific camera enhancement that improves focusing accuracy at 2x focal length.

The update also optimizes the Essential Space experience and performance, improves Always-On Display (AOD) transition animations, and includes various bug fixes and stability improvements.

The update is currently rolling out gradually to users. Nothing advises users to check for the update manually through the device’s settings. The company has also outlined its future plans for Essential Space, which include the introduction of Smart Collections, Focused Search, and Flip to Record features.

This update follows a pre-launch over-the-air (OTA) update for the Phone 3a Pro, which focused on improving camera clarity in macro mode and overall photo quality. That initial update also enhanced the functionality of the Essential Key and Space features, adding widgets and refining button interactions.

In related news, Nothing has informed customers in certain overseas regions about a shipment delay for pre-ordered Phone 3a Pro units. The company has indicated that these pre-orders will now ship before April 15th.
