Nothing has opened public testing for its next major software update, Nothing OS 4.0, which is built on Android 16. The open beta is now live for several of the company’s handsets, marking the first chance for users outside of closed testing to try the update ahead of its stable release.
At launch, the beta can be installed on the Nothing Phone (3), Phone (2), Phone (2a), and Phone (2a) Plus. Support for the Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro is expected to follow later in October. To join, devices must already be running the latest stable release. From there, users need to install an APK provided through Nothing’s official Community hub. This enables a new option within Settings > System, called “Nothing Beta Hub,” where registration and the update process can be completed.
As with any early-access software, the build comes with caveats. Bugs and instability are expected, and Nothing itself warns against installing the beta on a primary device. Participants are encouraged to send feedback through Settings > System > Feedback, which will help refine the update before its wider rollout.
Nothing OS 4.0 was first announced earlier this month as the company’s interpretation of Android 16. While details on new features are still being fleshed out, the beta gives developers and early adopters the opportunity to explore the changes first-hand and shape the final release.
