Nintendo Switch 2 surpasses 10 million units sold in just four months

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 has already sold more than 10 million units, marking a strong start for the company’s latest console. According to Nintendo’s official hardware sales update, the system reached 10.36 million units sold as of September 30—just four months after its June launch. For comparison, the Wii U, one of Nintendo’s least successful consoles, sold 13.56 million units over its entire four-year lifespan.

These early figures do not yet include October sales, which likely benefited from the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a major title available on both the original Switch and the new hardware. With the upcoming holiday season set to deliver first-party titles like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Kirby Air Riders, and Metroid Prime 4, analysts expect the Switch 2 to surpass the Wii U’s lifetime sales before the end of 2025.

The initial launch period was marked by shortages, with consoles selling out rapidly in June and early July, but availability has since stabilized across major markets. Despite some criticism around pricing—seen by many as high for a Nintendo console—the Switch 2 has maintained strong demand, suggesting that the company’s hybrid approach to handheld and home gaming continues to resonate with consumers.

Nintendo also released software sales data that underscores the new console’s momentum. Mario Kart World has already sold 9.57 million copies, while Donkey Kong Bananza has moved 3.49 million units. These numbers reflect the company’s continued dominance in the family-friendly and cross-generational gaming space, where recognizable franchises drive hardware adoption.

While online debate about pricing and performance has lingered, the sales trajectory suggests that Nintendo’s strategy—iterating on the successful Switch model rather than overhauling it—remains commercially sound. The Switch 2’s early performance places it well ahead of pace compared to its predecessor’s launch window, and its lineup of exclusive titles should carry that momentum through the holiday season and beyond.
