Nintendo launches Nintendo Today app, teasing Switch 2 details

Nintendo has released a new mobile application, “Nintendo Today,” coinciding with the lead-up to the anticipated reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2. The app, available for iOS and Android, serves as a centralized hub for Nintendo news, a game release calendar, and various multimedia content, including short films and concept art.

The launch of “Nintendo Today” follows Nintendo’s recent Direct presentation, which showcased upcoming games for the original Nintendo Switch. The company has announced that it will provide further details about the Switch 2 during a subsequent Direct presentation next week, with supplemental information also expected to be disseminated through the new app.

“Nintendo Today” allows users to personalize their experience by selecting preferred Nintendo franchises and characters. This customization influences the content displayed within the app’s Home and Calendar tabs. Users can also configure notification settings to receive updates on news and events.

The iOS version of the app includes widget functionality, offering medium and large widget sizes. The medium widget displays dynamic content, such as videos from Nintendo Direct presentations and news updates. The larger widget provides a monthly calendar view, highlighting upcoming game releases and events, with thematic elements corresponding to the user’s selected franchises.

Nintendo has indicated that it will continue to utilize Nintendo Direct presentations for game announcements. However, the company also plans to leverage the “Nintendo Today” app as a platform for disseminating information about the Switch 2, following its April 2nd Direct. This suggests a dual-pronged approach to information dissemination, combining traditional Direct presentations with app-based updates.

Notably, the “Nintendo Today” app has inadvertently revealed a potential detail regarding the Switch 2’s controller. An image within the app depicts a new button on the Joy-Con, labeled with the letter “C.” This “C” button, which has been the subject of speculation, may represent a new feature or control option for the upcoming console.

The “Nintendo Today” app appears to be designed to increase Nintendo’s visibility among consumers, particularly those who frequently use mobile devices. While the app serves a marketing purpose, it also provides users with a convenient and engaging platform for accessing Nintendo-related content.

“Nintendo Today” is available as a free download on the iOS App Store.
