New Sony G Master macro lens offers 1.4x magnification, advanced stabilisation

Sony has announced the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS, the first medium telephoto macro lens in its G Master lineup for E-mount cameras. The lens is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts who want high-resolution detail in close-up photography, with a particular emphasis on handling, stabilisation, and optical quality.

The standout feature is its 1.4x magnification, which goes beyond life-size reproduction and allows users to capture intricate details in subjects like flowers, insects, or textures that would otherwise be difficult to see. For those needing even greater reach, the lens is compatible with an optional teleconverter, pushing magnification up to 2.8x while maintaining working distance.

Optically, the design combines two extreme aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements to maintain sharpness across the frame and suppress common issues such as chromatic aberration. Autofocus performance has been upgraded with four XD linear motors, making focus acquisition up to 1.9 times faster than prior Sony macro lenses, while still keeping noise to a minimum. A dedicated aperture ring adds more direct manual control, catering to photographers who prefer a tactile shooting experience.

Macro photographers often need flexibility in focusing, and the FE 100mm F2.8 addresses this with three specific tools: a Full-time DMF switch for quick manual override, a Focus Mode switch to jump between AF and MF, and a Sliding Focus Ring linked to distance and magnification scales for precise manual adjustments.

The lens also brings refinements to image rendering. An 11-blade aperture design delivers smooth, rounded bokeh, while carefully tuned spherical aberration provides a balance between sharpness and background blur, consistent with the G Master series aesthetic. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II reduces flare and ghosting, particularly useful in backlit conditions.

Stabilisation has been tailored specifically for macro shooting. The built-in OSS system corrects not only angular and lateral shake but also front-to-back motion—an important factor when shooting small subjects at close range.

The FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS will be available in the UAE starting November 2025, expanding the G Master series into a focal length that balances portrait-style compression with close-up versatility.
