Instagram is reportedly working on a new feature that may soon require users to enter a code to view certain Reels. The platform appears to be testing a lock mechanism where select Reels remain hidden until a user inputs a passcode, with a hint offered to assist.
This new feature was first noticed on Instagram’s Design account, where a Reel displays a QR code and prompts users to “Enter secret code in the app” to unlock the content. A hint—“1st # in the caption”—guides viewers to find the correct code. In the test example, the answer was “threads,” referencing Meta’s newer platform.
The idea behind code-locked Reels seems to center around offering more exclusive content. It could appeal to content creators, public figures, or brands that want to reward dedicated followers or create a sense of exclusivity around certain posts. This could also be a tactic to drive deeper engagement, prompting followers to pay closer attention to captions and posts in order to access hidden content.
Although Instagram hasn’t officially announced this feature or confirmed a rollout timeline, the test suggests the company is exploring new ways to personalize and control how content is shared. In the future, users might be able to create private Reels viewable only by those who know the correct code, potentially including close friends, fan groups, or niche communities.
While the feature is still under development and there’s no indication of a wide release yet, it points to a trend of platforms experimenting with layered access to content. Whether it becomes a staple on Instagram or remains a limited trial remains to be seen.
