New Insta360 GO Ultra pushes tiny action cameras toward pro-level features

Insta360 has introduced the GO Ultra, the latest entry in its tiny action camera lineup, offering a bigger sensor, stronger performance, and extended features while keeping the compact form factor that made the series popular. Priced at $449, the new model is available starting August 21.

The most noticeable change is in the design. Unlike its pill-shaped predecessors, the GO Ultra has a square form and houses a 1/1.28-inch sensor that is more than twice the size of the one used in last year’s GO 3S. At just 53 grams, about the size of a smartwatch, the camera now records 4K video at 60 frames per second, with support for up to 50-megapixel stills, ActiveHDR, PureVideo low-light optimization, and slow-motion capture at 1080p/240fps.

Durability remains a focus, with an IPX8 rating that allows it to be submerged up to 10 meters (33 feet). Storage is now more flexible thanks to a removable microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB. Like previous versions, it attaches to mounts magnetically, including Insta360’s necklace clip and various bike and chest rigs.

The Ultra also introduces a new 5nm AI processor to improve image processing and expand editing capabilities. Onboard AI tools can help with scene recognition, transitions, effects, and real-time data overlays. The companion app has been redesigned with support for GPS, heart rate, and speed data from Strava and other third-party devices, making it a stronger option for cyclists, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Battery performance has improved as well. The camera alone lasts about 70 minutes per charge, while the bundled Action Pod—which includes a flip-up display—extends total runtime to around 200 minutes. A new fast-charging feature brings the camera from 0% to 80% in about 12 minutes.

Insta360’s GO cameras have often been praised for hardware innovation but criticized for clunky software. With the GO Ultra, the company is emphasizing its redesigned app as much as its hardware upgrades, suggesting that usability and workflow improvements are now central to its pitch.

The standard $449 bundle includes the GO Ultra camera, the Action Pod (in black or white), a magnetic pendant and clip, a quick-release safety cord, a USB-C charging cable, and a lens guard.

The GO Ultra’s mix of portability, higher-quality optics, and software tools suggests that Insta360 is aiming not only at action sports users but also at vloggers and casual creators who want a lightweight alternative to GoPros and smartphones. Whether its app experience finally matches the promise of its hardware will likely determine how well the new model is received.
