New case adds USB-C to older iPhones — no soldering required

For years, iPhone users with Lightning ports have watched USB-C become the standard for everything from Android phones to MacBooks, iPads, and accessories. Now, a new accessory aims to bridge that gap—without any need for internal hardware mods.

Swiss engineer Ken Pillonel, best known for famously retrofitting a USB-C port into an iPhone X back in 2021, has unveiled a commercial version of that idea: a snap-on case that brings full USB-C functionality to Lightning-based iPhones. The product, released under his brand “Obsoless,” allows users to charge, transfer data, and use Apple CarPlay over USB-C without altering their device’s internal components.

This isn’t just a cosmetic add-on. The case incorporates a custom-designed circuit board that physically connects to the iPhone’s Lightning port via an internal connector embedded within the enclosure. According to Pillonel, the system supports 9V fast charging and maintains full compatibility with CarPlay and data transfer—something that off-the-shelf Lightning-to-USB-C adapters generally can’t offer reliably.

In a breakdown video, Pillonel explains the engineering challenges he had to overcome, including ensuring stability for fast power delivery and maintaining data throughput integrity. Drawing from earlier work on USB-C mods for AirPods, he built the case with a two-part latching mechanism that clicks together securely—no tools or adhesives required. The closing system, inspired by pen clickers and belt buckles, is as much mechanical ingenuity as it is product design.

The case also supports MagSafe, keeping it compatible with Apple’s magnetic accessories and chargers. At launch, the product supports 20 different iPhone models that still rely on Lightning, stretching across multiple generations. It’s a plug-and-play solution for users who want the benefits of USB-C without waiting for Apple to abandon Lightning across the board—or upgrading to a newer model.

Obsoless plans to release additional color options starting in September, and users can register on the company’s website for availability updates.

For iPhone owners not ready—or willing—to upgrade, this case presents a rare opportunity: embrace modern connectivity standards while keeping your existing device in play.
