After the initial tease at Unpacked, Samsung has finally given us a proper look at the Galaxy Ring at Mobile World Congress 2024. This health-focused wearable is poised to take on the popular Oura Ring, promising cutting-edge sensors and deep sleep tracking insights.
Journalists got a hands-on look, but sadly, no photos were allowed. Initial reports describe the Galaxy Ring as slightly chunkier than the Oura, but surprisingly lightweight on the finger. It’ll come in platinum silver, gold, and ceramic black, with sizes ranging from 5 to 13 (S-XL). Depending on the size, battery capacity varies (14.5 mAh – 21.5 mAh), but how that translates to battery life remains to be seen.
Samsung’s VP Dr. Hon Pak revealed some key elements in a blog post. Sleep tracking is a major focus, using heart rate, movement, and breathing data to offer personalized advice. They’re also partnering with Natural Cycles for fertility tracking, mirroring a key Oura feature.
Samsung is introducing a new “My Vitality Score” metric to gauge alertness. Based on sleep data and other factors, this score will aim to help users optimize their days with science-backed “Booster Cards” offering tips.
The Galaxy Ring will join the Samsung Health platform and sync seamlessly with the Galaxy Watch. This means users can wear both for the most comprehensive health insights. Crucially, the ring form factor should prove less disruptive to sleep compared to a smartwatch.
Exact pricing, the full sensor suite, and launch date are still under wraps. The Galaxy Ring will initially only work with Samsung Galaxy phones, though there are plans for broader Android support later on. iOS compatibility remains a question mark.
Samsung’s Galaxy Ring entry into the smart ring market looks promising. Stay tuned for more updates as the launch approaches!
