Motorola enters book-style foldable market with Razr Fold

Motorola has formally introduced the Razr Fold at MWC, marking the company’s first move into the book-style foldable category. While Motorola has spent the past few years refining its clamshell lineup, this device represents a shift toward the larger, productivity-focused format currently dominated by established competitors. With high-end specifications and a long-term software commitment, the Motorola Razr Fold signals a more direct attempt to compete at the top of the foldable market.

At the center of the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and either 512GB or 1TB of storage, depending on region. Notably, Motorola has opted for the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 rather than the Elite variant, positioning the Razr Fold close to flagship territory without claiming absolute top-tier silicon. The phone ships with Android 16 out of the box and comes with a promise of seven Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, a policy that aligns with the extended support now expected in the premium Android segment.

Display specifications are central to the Razr Fold’s pitch. The external screen measures 6.6 inches with a 165Hz refresh rate and a 21:9 aspect ratio, while the internal display expands to 8.1 inches with a 120Hz LTPO panel and ultra-thin glass. Both panels support 10-bit color, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. Motorola claims peak brightness levels of 6,000 nits on the cover display and 6,200 nits internally—figures that, if sustained under real-world conditions, would place the device among the brightest foldables available.

Despite the large battery and dual-display setup, the Razr Fold measures 4.6mm thick when open and 9.9mm when closed, with a total weight of 244 grams. Power comes from a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, supported by 80W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 5W reverse wired charging. The phone carries IP48 and IP49 ratings for dust and water resistance, a gradual improvement in durability for foldables that have historically lagged behind traditional smartphones.

Camera hardware is another area where Motorola is aiming to narrow the gap with conventional flagship phones. The triple rear system includes a 50MP Sony Lytia 828 primary sensor with optical image stabilization, a 50MP ultrawide with macro capability, and a 50MP periscope telephoto offering 3x optical zoom. Video recording extends up to 8K at 30fps and 4K at 120fps. A 32MP front camera sits on the cover display, while a 20MP sensor handles selfies on the internal screen.

Additional features include stereo speakers tuned by Bose with Dolby Atmos support and compatibility with the Moto Pen Ultra stylus, positioning the device as a potential alternative for users who prioritize multitasking or note-taking.

The Razr Fold will be available in Pantone Blackened Blue and Pantone Lily White. Motorola has confirmed a North American release in the coming months, with pricing details to be announced closer to launch. As competition intensifies in the foldable phone market, the Motorola Razr Fold enters as a technically ambitious option. Its long-term relevance will depend less on headline specifications and more on durability, software consistency, and how effectively it integrates into everyday use.
