Microsoft’s “Recall” tool for Windows 11: your personal AI-powered memory assistant

Microsoft is unveiling a groundbreaking new feature for Windows 11 called “Recall,” designed to function like a personal memory assistant for your computer. This innovative tool keeps track of everything you see and do on your PC, allowing you to effortlessly search and retrieve any past activity.

Recall’s impressive scope includes logging actions within apps, tracking communications in meetings, remembering visited websites, and more. By performing a “Recall” action, similar to an AI-powered search, you can instantly access a snapshot of a specific time period, providing context for your memory.

A timeline interface enables you to visually scroll through your past activities, making it easy to find what you need. Live Captions transcribe and even translate speech from live meetings and videos, further enhancing the search capabilities.

While similar concepts have been explored before, Microsoft’s Recall takes it to a new level with deep integration into Windows 11. Unlike third-party apps like Rewind for Mac, Recall is native to the operating system, eliminating the need for additional installations and permissions.

However, there’s a catch – Recall will only be available on new “Copilot Plus PCs” equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips. These chips contain the necessary neural processing unit (NPU) to power Recall’s functionality.

Microsoft emphasizes that the Recall index remains private and local on your device. You can control the data it captures by pausing, stopping, deleting content, or excluding specific apps or websites.

This revolutionary tool promises to revolutionize how we interact with our computers, making it easier to find information, revisit past activities, and stay organized. It’s a testament to Microsoft’s commitment to leveraging AI to enhance productivity and user experience.
