Microsoft integrates Copilot AI into GroupMe messaging app

Microsoft has announced the integration of its Copilot AI into the GroupMe messaging application, a platform popular among college students in the United States. This update brings AI capabilities directly into users’ chat experiences.

With the new Copilot integration, GroupMe users can leverage AI for various tasks within their chats. To activate Copilot, users can long-press a message and select the Copilot option or initiate a new direct message with Copilot from their chat list.

Copilot can assist with tasks such as solving math problems, providing restaurant recommendations, and generating images from text descriptions. It also offers image analysis capabilities.

Microsoft has highlighted several use cases for Copilot within GroupMe:

  • Generating suggested responses in group chats.
  • Simplifying complex concepts discussed in class chats.
  • Providing ideas for theme parties and travel plans.
  • Creating playlists based on shared songs.
  • Assisting with event planning and fundraising ideas.

Microsoft has assured users that Copilot will not monitor their GroupMe activity, emphasizing that group chats, direct messages, calls, and profile information remain inaccessible to Copilot and other AI features. The GroupMe team is actively developing further Copilot enhancements for future releases.

This update follows a previous major update to GroupMe, which introduced features like Announcement Mode, allowing group leaders to control posting within groups.

The latest GroupMe app update, Version 7.81, is available for download on the App Store.
