Meta AI now translates and lip-syncs reels across four major languages

Meta is expanding its AI-powered translation tools for Reels on Facebook and Instagram, allowing users to watch and understand videos from around the world without subtitles or language barriers. The new update enables automatic translation, dubbing, and even lip-syncing of short videos, extending support to English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese, with more languages expected soon.

The feature builds on Meta’s 2024 rollout of bidirectional translation between English and Spanish, which was designed to help creators reach broader audiences. With today’s expansion, the company aims to open Reels to some of its largest creator markets across North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

Using Meta AI, Reels can now be translated and dubbed in the creator’s own voice, mimicking their tone and delivery for a natural, authentic sound. An optional lip-syncing tool adjusts mouth movements to match the translated audio, creating a more seamless viewing experience that feels less like a dubbed video and more like an original recording.

Creators with at least 1,000 followers on Facebook, as well as all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is available, can use the translation feature at no cost. Meta says this democratizes global reach, allowing creators of all sizes to connect with international audiences without relying on expensive localization tools.

“Meta AI presents a huge opportunity for creators,” said influencer Roberto Nickson in a statement featured in the announcement. “What was previously prohibitively expensive and reserved for only the top one percent of creators is now widely available for all. It’s the great equalizer.”

Meta has also built in clear controls for viewers. Every translated reel is marked with the label “Translated with Meta AI,” and users can toggle translations on or off or choose to watch content in its original language via the settings menu.

The company frames the update as part of its broader mission to make content on its platforms more accessible and globally connected. By combining voice cloning, lip syncing, and multilingual AI translation, Meta is pushing Reels further toward a borderless social experience—one where a creator in São Paulo, Delhi, or Los Angeles can reach audiences in any language, without ever leaving their own feed.
