Mediatek unveils Kompanio 540 chip promising 35% longer Chromebook battery life

MediaTek has introduced the Kompanio 540 chipset, a new processor designed to improve the performance and efficiency of Chromebooks. The company claims the chip delivers up to 35% longer battery life compared to previous generations, while operating quietly enough to eliminate the need for cooling fans. Devices powered by the Kompanio 540 are expected to arrive in early 2026, targeting students, educators, and everyday users who prioritize long battery life and silent operation.

The Kompanio 540 is an octa-core processor that supports LPDDR5 memory, promising smoother multitasking and improved responsiveness for typical Chromebook workloads. MediaTek says the chip is built to handle everyday computing tasks such as web browsing, video streaming, and light gaming without overheating. The emphasis on energy efficiency also means longer uptime for portable devices, potentially allowing users to get through a full work or school day on a single charge.

Fanless design is another key feature of the Kompanio 540, made possible by the chip’s low thermal output. For classrooms, libraries, and shared workspaces, this silent operation could be a practical improvement over traditional Chromebook models that rely on small but noisy fans for cooling.

MediaTek has been steadily expanding its presence in the Chromebook market, positioning its Kompanio line as an alternative to Intel and Qualcomm’s low-power offerings. The Kompanio 540 represents a strategic move to strengthen that position, aiming to combine performance with affordability and efficiency. While the chip’s real-world performance remains to be seen, its design priorities suggest MediaTek is focused on delivering reliable, all-day computing rather than competing purely on raw power.

If the company’s claims hold true, the Kompanio 540 could help redefine expectations for entry-level and midrange Chromebooks — offering longer battery life, quieter performance, and adequate speed for most users. It’s a modest but potentially meaningful step toward making Chromebooks more practical for daily productivity and education.
