iPhone 17e arrives: specs, price, release date, and what’s new

Apple has introduced the iPhone 17e, positioning it as a lower-cost entry in the iPhone 17 lineup while keeping many of the features found across the broader range. The iPhone 17e starts at $599 in the U.S. and, unlike previous entry models, begins with 256GB of storage. That matches the starting price of the prior generation while doubling base capacity, a move that reflects how storage demands have shifted with 4K video, high-resolution photos, and increasingly large apps.

At the center of the iPhone 17e is the new A19 chip, built on a 3-nanometer process. Apple says the 6-core CPU is up to twice as fast as the iPhone 11, placing it firmly in the mid-to-upper tier of current smartphone performance. The 4-core GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and is designed to handle graphically demanding mobile games. A 16-core Neural Engine is tuned for on-device AI workloads, including Apple Intelligence features introduced with iOS 26. These include Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, as well as on-screen visual intelligence tools and call screening for unknown numbers.

The iPhone 17e also debuts Apple’s C1X modem, which the company says is up to twice as fast as the C1 in the iPhone 16e and 30 percent more energy efficient than the modem used in the iPhone 16 Pro. Combined with iOS 26 power management, Apple claims all-day battery life. Fast charging over USB-C can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter. Wireless charging is supported via MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 15W, an upgrade from the 7.5W Qi limit on the 16e.

The device features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with up to 1200 nits peak HDR brightness. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The phone carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance under IEC standard 60529, meaning it can withstand submersion up to 6 meters for 30 minutes under controlled conditions.

On the camera front, the 48MP Fusion rear camera supports 24MP default shooting and full 48MP capture. It also enables a 2x crop that Apple describes as optical-quality telephoto. Portrait mode benefits from improved depth mapping, and users can adjust focus after capture in supported scenarios. Video recording reaches 4K at up to 60 fps with Dolby Vision, and Spatial Audio capture is included for playback on compatible headphones. Wind noise reduction and audio editing tools are built into the software.

Satellite-based features remain part of the package, including Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, Roadside Assistance, and location sharing in Find My when outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. These services are included for two years from activation on supported models and depend on clear sky visibility. Crash Detection is also available, designed to identify severe car accidents and automatically contact emergency services if the user is unresponsive.

Design-wise, the iPhone 17e uses an aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure and is available in black, white, and soft pink with a matte finish. Face ID remains the biometric authentication method, and the customizable Action button returns for quick access to selected functions.

From an environmental standpoint, Apple says the iPhone 17e contains 30 percent recycled content, including 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. The company reports that 55 percent of manufacturing electricity across the supply chain comes from renewable sources, and retail packaging is fiber-based.

Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability starting March 11 in more than 70 countries. Storage options include 256GB and 512GB. Carrier and trade-in promotions can lower the effective price, depending on device condition and eligibility. AppleCare+, AppleCare One in the U.S., and iCloud+ subscription options are also available.

As a product, the iPhone 17e appears aimed at users who want current-generation performance and long-term software support without stepping into Pro-level pricing. By increasing base storage and maintaining flagship-adjacent silicon, Apple is recalibrating what “entry-level” means within its lineup. Whether the iPhone 17e becomes the default upgrade choice for mainstream buyers will likely depend less on headline specs and more on how it compares to discounted older models and aggressive midrange Android competitors in the same $500–$700 bracket.
