The iPhone 16 Pro Max has barely hit the shelves, but tech YouTuber Zack Nelson, known for his channel JerryRigEverything, has already put it through the wringer in his infamous durability test. The video, posted on Saturday, quickly gained traction, amassing over two million views in just a few days. Clearly, people are eager to see if Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone can withstand some serious abuse.

Nelson’s test is a visual spectacle, not for the faint of heart. It involves scraping, burning, and even bending the device, pushing it to its limits. While it’s painful to watch a brand-new phone get subjected to such treatment, the test does provide valuable insights into the resilience of the phone’s materials.

This year, Apple boasts that the iPhone 16 Pro Max features a Ceramic Shield display that’s 50% tougher than its predecessor and twice as tough as any other smartphone glass. However, Nelson’s tools still managed to leave their mark, raising questions about just how scratch-resistant the screen truly is.

Nelson, known for his witty commentary, couldn’t resist a few jabs at Apple during the test. When examining the triple camera setup, he remarked, “The cameras are lined up this way to film in spatial video for the three people who own Vision Pros.” He also quipped about Apple’s tendency to repackage existing technology, highlighting Samsung’s earlier implementation of 4K 120fps video recording.

One of the most dramatic parts of the test involves a naked flame held against the display. Remarkably, the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s screen showed no visible damage even after more than 10 seconds of exposure. Still, as Nelson wisely cautions, it’s not something you should try at home.

Last year’s bend test of the iPhone 15 Pro Max produced a surprising result when the back glass shattered on the first attempt. Naturally, anticipation was high to see how the iPhone 16 Pro Max would handle the same challenge. Did it survive? You’ll have to watch the video to find out, but one thing’s for sure: JerryRigEverything’s durability tests continue to be a must-watch for anyone considering a new smartphone purchase. They provide a real-world glimpse into how these devices might hold up under duress, beyond the controlled environments of manufacturer testing.
