Instagram is currently testing a repost feature that would allow users to share posts directly to their Feed, the company confirmed recently. While this capability has been in development since at least 2022, some users have now reported seeing the option appear on their accounts, signaling that the feature is moving closer to a potential public rollout.
Currently, Instagram users can share posts to their Stories, but the new repost function would expand sharing options by enabling posts to be reshared within the main Feed itself. This change aims to simplify the resharing process, replacing the need for third-party apps or workarounds that some users rely on to repost content.
The introduction of reposts may face mixed reactions. Instagram already hosts a variety of content formats—including posts, Stories, Reels, Notes, direct messages, and advertisements—so adding another way to share could contribute to the platform’s complexity. However, reposting also offers a familiar and straightforward way for users to amplify content they find valuable, a feature popular on other platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Threads.
For creators, an official repost option could improve content visibility and help ensure proper credit is given when their work is shared. Currently, many memes and photos circulate on Instagram without clear attribution, so this feature may promote more transparent sharing practices.
The repost function follows a broader social media trend where sharing and redistributing content quickly has become a core aspect of user engagement. Twitter’s “Retweet” feature, introduced in 2009, is often cited as the pioneer of this format, and platforms like TikTok have since adopted similar tools.
At this stage, Instagram has not confirmed a timeline for a wider rollout of the repost feature. As with any test, it remains uncertain whether the option will become a permanent addition or how broadly it will be made available.
