Instagram has introduced a new “Watch History” feature that allows users to revisit previously viewed Reels — a long-requested addition that aligns the app more closely with TikTok’s viewing tools. The feature, announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, gives users an easy way to find videos they’ve already watched but didn’t save, addressing one of the platform’s more frustrating limitations.
The update comes as part of Meta’s ongoing effort to refine Reels, its short-form video product that was originally designed to compete with TikTok. Until now, users who lost track of a Reel — whether due to an accidental swipe, app closure, or interruption — had little recourse beyond scrolling endlessly or downloading their account data to manually search through it. The new Watch History option simplifies that process significantly.
Accessible through the app’s “Profile” menu under “Settings” and then “Your Activity,” the feature displays every Reel a user has watched. It also offers filters to sort videos by date range — such as the past week, month, or a specific period — and includes an option to remove items from the list. Unlike TikTok, Instagram also allows users to change the sorting order, viewing content chronologically, in reverse, or grouped by creator.
Mosseri noted that the feature was developed in response to consistent user feedback. Many Instagram users had requested an easier way to locate previously viewed Reels, especially as the app’s algorithm-driven feed makes rediscovering content difficult once it’s refreshed.
The move continues Meta’s pattern of adopting successful features from TikTok to strengthen user engagement on Reels. Over the past year, Instagram has rolled out several updates inspired by its rival, including Picture-in-Picture playback and the ability to link multiple Reels into a single series. These additions suggest Instagram is focused on improving the Reels viewing experience, not just through algorithmic discovery but also by offering users more control over how they access and organize content.
The new Watch History feature is gradually rolling out worldwide and is available in the latest version of the Instagram app.
