insta360 unveils X4 air, its lightest-ever 8K 360 camera in a travel-friendly body

Insta360 has unveiled the X4 Air, a compact 8K 360-degree camera designed to bridge the gap between its existing X4 and X5 models. Weighing just 165 grams, the X4 Air is currently the company’s lightest 8K camera—noticeably slimmer than the 200-gram X5 and the 203-gram X4. Despite the drop in weight, Insta360 claims the new model maintains many of the same core features as its higher-end siblings.

At its core, the X4 Air uses dual 1/1.8-inch sensors that capture footage with a 134 percent increase in pixel area per frame compared to the standard X4. Its interchangeable lenses can be swapped in seconds and now feature improved optical coatings that reportedly double their drop resistance. The camera is waterproof up to 49 feet, making it suitable for underwater recording without a separate housing.

Insta360 positions the X4 Air as a more flexible alternative to the precision-focused X5, emphasizing ease of movement and portability. It supports most X5 accessories, allowing current users to expand their setup without starting from scratch. The new camera also integrates a built-in wind guard and the brand’s dual fisheye lens system, enabling 360-degree capture that can be reframed in the Insta360 app. Users can adjust angles and perspectives in post-production, a staple of the brand’s software-driven ecosystem.

Like the flagship X5, the X4 Air includes gesture controls, AI-assisted shooting modes, and the company’s well-known “Invisible Selfie Stick” feature, which erases the mounting pole from footage for smooth, drone-style shots. The trade-off for the lighter frame is a smaller battery, capable of about 88 minutes of recording at 8K 30fps—roughly 12 minutes shorter than the X5’s runtime.

The Insta360 X4 Air is available in black or white and has begun rolling out to select markets through the company’s website and Amazon, with US and Canadian availability expected soon. Pricing starts at $400 for the Standard bundle, while the $440 Starter bundle includes a 114cm invisible selfie stick, a lens cap, and an extra battery. Both options come with a one-year Insta360+ cloud subscription that provides 200GB of storage.

The X4 Air’s launch reinforces Insta360’s continued focus on modular, mobile-friendly 360 cameras. It may not replace the flagship X5, but it aims to attract creators who prioritize lightness and convenience without sacrificing image fidelity. For travelers, vloggers, and drone-style content makers, the X4 Air’s combination of portability, 8K recording, and strong accessory compatibility gives it a distinct place in the company’s growing camera lineup.
