Huawei’s Mate 70 Air takes aim at Apple’s ultra-slim iPhone Air

Huawei is preparing to enter the ultra-thin smartphone race with its upcoming Mate 70 Air — a model clearly positioned against Apple’s iPhone Air. Leaks surfacing on Weibo ahead of the expected November 6 launch offer a good look at Huawei’s latest design direction, one that continues the brand’s emphasis on minimalism and refined hardware.

Based on these early images, the Mate 70 Air carries Huawei’s familiar circular camera module, centrally placed on the back panel. The design seems to build on previous Mate models, but with sharper detailing and softer edges that contribute to a noticeably thinner profile. The matte finish, available in silver or gold, moves away from the glossy aesthetic of the Mate 70 Pro+ and leans toward a more subdued, contemporary look.

The rear setup features three cameras arranged symmetrically with an LED flash and the XMAGE branding — Huawei’s in-house imaging system. While full specifications remain under wraps, this design suggests a continued focus on mobile photography, an area the company has consistently treated as a core feature across its flagship lines.

On the front, the Mate 70 Air appears to feature a curved, nearly bezel-free display with a discreet punch-hole camera. Early impressions describe it as lightweight and ergonomically balanced, with its slim frame enhancing comfort without compromising the premium feel. The power and volume buttons sit along the left edge, in line with Huawei’s recent hardware layouts.

Although full technical details will likely be revealed during the official presentation on Huawei’s VMall platform, pre-orders have reportedly begun in select stores across China.

If the leaked details hold true, Huawei’s Mate 70 Air could signal a more mature phase in the “thinnest phone” competition — one that prioritizes balance, durability, and subtlety over pure spectacle. The official unveiling is expected on November 6, when the company is likely to confirm specs, pricing, and global availability.
