Huawei has opened pre-orders for the HUAWEI WATCH 5, the latest entry in its smartwatch lineup, continuing the company’s focus on blending biometric tracking with a refined aesthetic. Priced from AED 1599, the WATCH 5 introduces an updated design, new gesture-based interactions, and an advanced health sensor module called X-TAP.
The central innovation in this release is the integration of HUAWEI’s new X-TAP technology, a multi-sensor system that combines ECG, PPG, and pressure sensitivity in a single module. Unlike traditional wrist-based wearables, this system shifts health measurements to the fingertip, where sensors can take advantage of thinner skin and denser blood vessels for potentially more accurate readings. This setup allows for fingertip blood oxygen (SpO2) measurements in under 10 seconds and delivers a “Health Glance” summary with 11 data points—including heart rate variability and stress levels—within one minute.
X-TAP also supports varying pressure inputs, enabling different controls based on how firmly the user presses. This expands interaction options without increasing screen complexity and adds to the watch’s broader gesture control features. Users can manage calls, control music, and even trigger the smartphone camera with gestures like Double Tap and Double Slide—useful in situations where touch interaction isn’t practical.
Design-wise, the WATCH 5 comes in 42mm and 46mm variants, each built from different high-grade materials. The smaller version is offered in stainless steel, while the larger 46mm option adds aerospace-grade titanium, known for its strength-to-weight ratio. All models use sapphire glass for scratch resistance and clarity. Strap options include fluoroelastomer, titanium, and a new composite material designed to mimic the look and feel of leather while being water-resistant and odor-free.
Battery life ranges depending on size and usage. The 46mm version lasts up to 4.5 days in standard mode or up to 11 days in battery saver mode. The 42mm model offers slightly less, with a maximum of 7 days in saver mode. The watch also supports eSIM functionality, allowing it to function independently of a smartphone for calls and connectivity.
Aesthetically, Huawei is drawing inspiration from aerospace themes, referencing the Kármán Line in its design narrative—the boundary between Earth and space. Color options include Sand Gold and Beige for the 42mm edition, and Purple for the 46mm, with multiple case finishes available depending on the chosen configuration.
The HUAWEI WATCH 5 offers a notable combination of hardware and software upgrades that align with broader trends in wearable health tech. While the effectiveness of fingertip monitoring and gesture interactions will be tested in real-world use, the move toward more sensor-rich and user-friendly wearables continues to define the direction of the category. Pre-orders are now live through Huawei’s website and select regional retailers.
