Huawei has unveiled the FreeBuds Pro 5, a new pair of flagship wireless earbuds that introduce NearLink audio transmission — a technology making its debut in consumer audio. The company describes NearLink as a step toward higher-quality, low-latency wireless sound, promising more efficient performance than traditional Bluetooth-based systems.
Currently open for reservations in China ahead of a full launch later this month, the FreeBuds Pro 5 arrives shortly after Huawei’s Mate 70 Air release, signaling another push into premium hardware. The key advancement is the integration of NearLink Audio, which enables data transmission rates of up to 2.3 Mbps for lossless playback and peaks at 12 Mbps under optimal conditions. The earbuds also support the L2HC codec, intended to enhance sound fidelity beyond what most Bluetooth earbuds can deliver today.
Huawei claims that NearLink improves both sound quality and energy efficiency, potentially reducing power consumption by as much as 40% compared with current wireless standards. That efficiency could lead to longer listening time, although Huawei has yet to release specific figures. The previous FreeBuds Pro 4 offered around 33 hours of battery life with the charging case, so a measurable improvement would be expected.
On the design side, the FreeBuds Pro 5 introduces subtle adjustments, including relocated noise-cancelling microphones that may help refine active noise cancellation performance. While Huawei hasn’t made major aesthetic changes, the internal updates suggest a focus on sound consistency and hardware optimization rather than a complete redesign.
The introduction of NearLink comes as part of Huawei’s broader strategy to establish alternatives to Bluetooth for device connectivity, positioning itself as a key player in next-generation wireless standards. If NearLink performs as advertised, it could set a precedent for other manufacturers exploring higher-bandwidth, lower-latency wireless formats.
With lossless transmission, improved energy use, and an updated ANC system, the FreeBuds Pro 5 could become a serious option in the premium earbuds market — particularly for users already within Huawei’s ecosystem. More concrete details on performance and pricing will emerge once the earbuds officially go on sale later this month.
