After months of anticipation, HMD has finally unveiled the Fusion, a modular smartphone concept first teased at MWC earlier this year. The Fusion aims to deliver a customizable smartphone experience that adapts to your needs and style, all at an accessible price point.
Starting at just €250 (approximately $300), the Fusion base model may not boast flagship-level specs, but its true potential lies in its “interchangeable outfits” – modular accessories that are set to launch later this year. These outfits promise to expand the Fusion’s functionality and aesthetics, allowing users to tailor the device to their individual preferences.
The base model features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, a choice of 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. The 6.56-inch IPS LCD display offers HD+ resolution and a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. On the camera front, a 108-megapixel main camera is complemented by a 2-megapixel depth sensor, while a 50-megapixel front-facing camera handles selfies.
Powered by a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W wired charging, the Fusion should easily last through a day of use. It runs on Android 14 out of the box, ensuring access to the latest features and security updates.
While the Fusion will initially launch in Europe, HMD plans to bring it to the US market soon. In addition, the company has announced a software and hardware developer kit, opening the door for further customization and innovation from the community.
The HMD Fusion’s success will likely hinge on the range and affordability of its modular outfits. If HMD can deliver on its promise of true customization at a reasonable cost, the Fusion could carve out a unique niche in the smartphone landscape.
