Grok adds Edward Cullen-inspired male AI—but who is it really for?

Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has added a new digital face to its expanding lineup of animated companions—this time aimed at women, or at least, what Musk imagines women might want. The latest addition is a stern, anime-style male character described as a fusion of Twilight’s Edward Cullen and Fifty Shades of Grey’s Christian Grey—two fictional figures known more for their brooding intensity and questionable boundaries than for nuanced emotional depth.

Musk introduced the character on X (formerly Twitter), asking for name suggestions while sharing an image of a sharply dressed, dark-suited man with a cold stare. The aesthetic appears carefully chosen to emulate a certain trope: controlling, mysterious, emotionally unavailable—but supposedly irresistible. It’s a move that reflects xAI’s recent efforts to personalize AI through character-driven design, even if it’s unclear how seriously the company is taking its own creation.

The male bot follows Grok’s earlier controversial rollout of two AI companions, including Ani, a flirtatious anime girl who reportedly becomes more revealing the more she’s complimented—prompting questions about xAI’s approach to moderation, gender stereotypes, and user boundaries. This latest “Edward-Grey” hybrid appears to be more tailored to the romantic-fantasy mold Musk believes appeals to female users. Whether it resonates as intended is another matter.

Online, early reactions have leaned toward irony and meme culture. Men seem particularly invested in the character, with many treating him less like a romantic partner and more like a digital “bro” or influencer. One popular nickname suggestion was “Chad,” an internet term used to describe an archetype of male attractiveness—though usually from a male gaze. Other suggestions included “Nyx,” “Taki,” and “Andrej,” the latter possibly referencing former OpenAI and Tesla AI executive Andrej Karpathy, who even joined in the joke, humorously negotiating a mock licensing deal with Musk.

For now, there’s no word on whether the male bot will have NSFW options like Ani. When asked if the new companion would lean toward flirtation or fall more into the “wellness guru” archetype, Musk replied with a characteristically vague: “Whatever winds your clock.” It’s a response that keeps things ambiguous, but not especially reassuring for those looking for thoughtful boundaries in human-AI interaction.

Despite Grok 4’s improved performance in language model rankings, xAI’s rollout strategy continues to generate as much controversy as it does curiosity. From NSFW features to clumsy jokes about revenue sharing, the line between product development and social media theater remains thin. While this new character is pitched as appealing to women, it may end up attracting more attention for what it reveals about Musk’s vision of AI—and the assumptions baked into it—than for any real romantic utility.

As for the actual utility or impact of this “Twilight-meets-tech” experiment? That remains to be seen. But in true Musk fashion, the lines between parody, product, and provocation continue to blur.
