Google Photos has introduced a new feature that helps users identify images that have been edited using artificial intelligence. This comes as AI image generation and manipulation tools become increasingly sophisticated, making it more difficult to distinguish between real and AI-altered images.
Transparency in the Age of AI
The new feature in Google Photos reads an image’s metadata to determine if it has been enhanced using AI tools. If so, the app will display this information alongside other image details like file name, location, and backup status.
“Photos edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser and Zoom Enhance already include metadata based on technical standards from The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to indicate that they’ve been edited using generative
AI,” Google explained in its blog post. “Now we’re taking it a step further, making this information visible… in the Photos app.”
This move towards transparency is crucial in an era where AI-generated and AI-edited images are becoming more prevalent. It allows users to understand how the images they encounter, particularly within their own photo libraries, may have been altered.
Spotting the AI Touch
The feature will specifically identify images edited within Google Photos using AI-powered tools like Magic Editor and Magic Eraser. It will also list edits made with non-AI tools like Best Take and Add Me on Pixel phones. However, it’s important to note that this feature relies on metadata that could potentially be removed or altered. Therefore, it may not be a foolproof method for detecting all AI-edited images.
Empowering Users with Information
While not designed to identify AI-generated images found online, this new feature in Google Photos provides users with greater awareness and control over the images they store and share. It’s a step towards fostering transparency and responsible use of AI in the realm of image editing.Sources and related content
