Google begins gradual rollout of Gmail address change feature

Google has begun rolling out a long-requested option that allows users to change their Gmail address without creating an entirely new account. For years, accounts using an “@gmail.com” address were effectively permanent, even if the username no longer made sense professionally or personally. Only accounts tied to third-party email addresses had flexibility. That restriction is now being relaxed, marking a meaningful shift in how Gmail identities are managed.

The change surfaced quietly through a support page update and is being introduced gradually. Early reports indicated the notice appeared first in Hindi before expanding to other languages, suggesting a phased rollout rather than a universal launch. According to Google, availability will vary by account, which explains why many users do not yet see the option in their settings.

At its core, the update allows users to replace their existing Gmail username with a new one while keeping the same Google Account. The email address used to sign in can now be changed from one Gmail address to another Gmail address. Importantly, the account itself remains intact. Messages, files, photos, subscriptions, and access to services like Drive, Maps, YouTube, and Google Play are unaffected.

After the change, the original Gmail address does not disappear. Instead, it becomes an alias tied to the account. Emails sent to either the old or new address will arrive in the same inbox, and users can continue signing in with either address. Google also confirms that stored data is not altered during the transition, reducing the risk typically associated with account migrations.

There are, however, several limitations to consider. Users cannot delete the newly chosen Gmail address or reuse the old address to create a new account for at least 12 months. Each account is limited to three Gmail address changes. In addition, some older services and calendar entries may continue displaying the previous address for a period of time, as not all systems update instantly.

Spam is another practical consideration. Since the old Gmail address remains active as an alias, unwanted messages sent to it will still be delivered. Users hoping for a clean break from an address that has accumulated spam may find this less effective than expected.

If the feature is available, changing a Gmail address involves navigating to Google Account settings, selecting the option to change the account email, reviewing the implications, entering a new Gmail username, and confirming the update. Accounts that are not yet eligible will see a message indicating the setting cannot be changed.

For many users, the value of this update will depend on circumstance. Those dealing with outdated usernames, unprofessional addresses, or name changes now have an option that avoids the disruption of starting over. Others may prefer to leave things as they are, especially since forwarding from the old address remains unavoidable. Quiet as the rollout may be, the ability to change a Gmail address represents a notable shift in how long-term Google accounts can evolve.
