Gemini’s split-screen multitasking expands to Pixel 8 and 8 Pro

Google is extending Gemini’s split-screen multitasking feature to more devices, including some non-foldable Pixel phones.

First introduced for large-screen Android devices like the Pixel Fold, Samsung’s Galaxy Z series, and tablets such as the Pixel Tablet and Galaxy Tab, the feature is now appearing on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro through the beta version of the Google app (v16.35.63.sa.arm64).

To use it, open Gemini as an overlay on top of another app and drag the Gemini bar upward. This action splits the display in half, keeping Gemini active on one side while the original app remains on the other. On foldable devices, users can move the bar sideways to set a side-by-side view, but on standard phones the layout stacks apps vertically.

The rollout is still limited. Reports indicate the feature has not yet reached the Pixel 10 Pro XL, and older devices like the Pixel 6 Pro running the latest beta builds do not currently support it. For those without access, dragging the Gemini bar simply launches Gemini in full-screen mode.

Of course, Android already has a traditional split-screen function introduced with Android 7.0 Nougat in 2016. Users can enter it through the recent apps carousel by selecting “Split Screen” from an app’s menu. The Gemini method streamlines the process, offering a faster way to pair Gemini with another app for multitasking.

For heavy multitaskers, this could be a useful addition, especially when running Gemini alongside messaging, maps, or productivity tools. But as with earlier split-screen options, casual users may find themselves using it only occasionally.
