The Gemini app is expanding its capabilities with a new feature that allows users to upload and analyze video files. Previously limited to documents and images, Gemini now supports video prompts, enabling users to ask questions about their own videos as well as content from platforms like YouTube by pasting links.
In recent demonstrations, Gemini successfully analyzed uploaded videos and responded to specific queries. For example, when asked what time was displayed on a Nest Hub screen in a clip, Gemini not only answered but also provided a full video player interface to rewatch the footage. In another instance, Gemini offered a detailed description of a serene autumn forest scene, highlighting colors, atmosphere, and sensory details such as the sound of rustling leaves.
To upload videos, users can access the plus menu and select files from their Gallery or storage. However, this feature is not yet available to all users—video upload options may be grayed out if the capability hasn’t rolled out to a particular account or device. The update appears to be gradually reaching both free and paid users on Android (Google app 16.23 beta) and iOS platforms, including Gemini 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro versions. Currently, video upload is not supported on the web interface, which returns a “File type unsupported” message.
This video upload and analysis feature marks a significant step forward for Gemini, broadening the ways users can interact with AI to extract insights from multimedia content.
