Forget Wordle, Snake is the only game you need: Nokia launches 3 retro phone models

Fans of retro tech, rejoice! HMD Global, the company behind Nokia phones, has resurrected three more classic handsets. The Nokia 6310 (2024), 5310 (2024), and 230 (2024) lovingly reimagine beloved designs for a new era, but with a firmly old-school mindset.

These aren’t carbon copies. While they evoke the originals, they boast subtle modernizations: brighter screens, advanced accessibility features, Bluetooth 5.0, and even USB-C charging! The full specs are available on HMD’s website, though pricing and release dates are still under wraps. Based on past re-releases, expect these to be affordable.

Don’t expect smartphone goodies here. No app stores, no fancy touchscreens, and these devices rely on the aging 2G network – something to watch out for if your area doesn’t support it anymore.

What you do get is a refreshingly simple interface, legendary standby battery life measured in weeks, and those iconic Nokia designs evoking simpler times. Nokia’s pitch is clear: these phones are a deliberate “digital detox” from the social media frenzy.

It’s not HMD’s first retro rodeo. They’ve reimagined simpler Nokia models before, including a 2021 revamp of the 6310 with a smaller battery. This 2024 re-release aims to rectify that.

All three new-old phones share similar specs: 2.8-inch display, removable 1450mAh battery (up to 27 days standby!), and a Unisoc chip with a tiny 8MB of RAM. Storage is tight, but expandable via microSD.

Where they stand apart is in the design and a few tiny features. Only the 230 (2024) has a slightly better (still basic) 2MP camera. The music-minded 5310 (2024) gets dedicated playback buttons and front-facing speakers for blasting those old MP3s. Of course, classic games like Snake and an FM radio are on board all three models.

Let’s be honest, these aren’t your daily-driver phone contender in 2024. They exist for two main groups:

  1. The Nostalgic: Anyone craving a simpler era of cellphones, where texting took effort and a battery didn’t die by lunchtime.
  2. The Practical: These could be great as backup phones, ‘burner’ devices, or for those who need an ultra-simple, durable phone (think young kids and older users).

The Nokia 6310, 5310, and 230 (2024 Editions) are less about cutting-edge tech and more about a feeling. Whether it’s pure nostalgia or the desire for distraction-free communication, they offer a unique proposition in a world of ever-more-complex smartphones.
