Fairphone 6 refines modular smartphone design with practical upgrades

Fairphone has unveiled its latest model, the Fairphone 6, a follow-up to the Fairphone 5 with incremental improvements and a more compact form. Slightly smaller and about 9% lighter than its predecessor, the new device houses a larger 4,415mAh battery. That battery, like most parts of the phone, remains user-replaceable with a standard screwdriver, emphasizing Fairphone’s continued commitment to repairability and long-term ownership.

One of the more notable changes this time around is the enhanced modularity. The Fairphone 6 now supports swappable rear accessories, such as a card holder or a finger loop, attached by removing a small section of the back panel with two screws. This approach follows a similar modular philosophy seen in other devices like the CMF Phone 1, though its usefulness will depend largely on how expansive Fairphone’s accessory ecosystem becomes.

The phone is available now in Europe for €599 (approximately $696), offered in black, green, and white. In the U.S., it will be distributed exclusively through Murena starting in August, priced at $899. Unlike the European model, the U.S. version runs /e/OS, an Android-based operating system that omits Google services to focus on privacy.

Internally, the Fairphone 6 includes a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage expandable up to 2TB via SDXC card. The 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display, while slightly smaller than the previous model, now offers a smoother 120Hz refresh rate. Camera capabilities include a 50MP main rear sensor, a 13MP ultrawide lens, and a 32MP front-facing camera. This marks a downgrade in front-facing camera resolution compared to the Fairphone 5, which featured 50MP sensors across all cameras.

While the physical design maintains much of the Fairphone aesthetic, the rear camera housing is now flush with the back panel, eliminating the previously raised bump. The company continues to prioritize ease of repair with access to 12 swappable components including the battery, screen, and USB port. All of these can be replaced using just a standard screwdriver.

The phone carries an IP55 rating, which offers moderate protection against dust and water spray but falls short of the waterproofing standards of most modern smartphones. Still, the Fairphone 6 stands out for its longevity promise: a five-year warranty and eight years of software support, extending through 2033.

A new feature dubbed “Fairphone Moments” introduces a minimalist user mode, activated by a dedicated side switch. Though details remain vague, it appears designed to help users limit distractions by stripping the interface down to its essentials.

Overall, the Fairphone 6 refines its predecessor’s sustainable design philosophy without chasing trends. The additions are practical rather than flashy, geared toward users who value device longevity, repairability, and a more mindful digital experience.
