Dell retires XPS name with new premium laptop series

Dell has launched its new Premium series of Windows 11 laptops, the Dell 14 Premium and Dell 16 Premium, marking the end of the XPS branding in its high-end lineup. While the rebranding signals a strategic shift, the design approach remains similar to previous XPS models, with wedge-shaped builds, slim profiles, and Gorilla Glass 3 covering slightly larger displays at 14.5 and 16.3 inches respectively.

Both laptops offer various display configurations, including 2K LCD panels with 120Hz refresh rates for base models and high-end OLED options at 3.2K (14.5-inch) and 4K (16.3-inch) with DisplayHDR 500 certification. These OLED displays reach up to 400 nits brightness with full DCI-P3 coverage, while LED versions average around 500 nits. Audio hardware includes quad speakers with Dolby Atmos support, a dual microphone array, and a universal headphone jack with head tracking capabilities.

Under the hood, Dell equips these laptops with Intel’s new Core Ultra processors. The 14 Premium is available with the Core Ultra 7 255H or 256H CPUs, while the 16 Premium offers those options along with an exclusive Intel Core Ultra 9 285H. Dell claims these processors bring up to a 33% performance improvement over past XPS models, alongside a 2.4x increase in AI-related processing power.

Graphics configurations vary, with the 14 Premium capped at an NVIDIA RTX 4050 GPU, while the 16 Premium supports RTX 5050, 5060, and 5070 GPUs for heavier creative or graphical workloads. Both models default to Intel’s Arc 140T GPU in base configurations, suitable for general productivity and media use.

Battery life is another focus, with Dell stating up to 20 hours of Netflix streaming on the 14 Premium’s 2K LCD model and up to 27 hours on the 16 Premium under similar conditions. These figures drop notably with OLED configurations, down to 11 hours on the 14.5-inch 3.2K OLED and 9 hours on the 16.3-inch 4K OLED.

Additional features include WiFi 7 support, up to 64GB of LPDDR5x memory, up to 4TB of storage, encryption-ready SSDs, and Full HD webcams, reflecting their positioning as versatile devices for professionals and power users.

Pricing for the Dell 14 Premium starts at $1,650 for a Core Ultra 7 CPU, 16GB RAM, 2K LCD display, and Intel Arc graphics. A higher-end configuration with an RTX 4050, 32GB RAM, and the 3.2K OLED display is listed at $2,350. The Dell 16 Premium begins at $2,700 with a Core Ultra 7, 32GB RAM, 2K LCD, and RTX 5060 GPU, while a version featuring the Core Ultra 9 CPU and 4K OLED display is priced at $3,050.
