Anthropic is expanding the role of its AI assistant Claude inside Microsoft’s productivity ecosystem, introducing deeper integration with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. The update is designed to streamline workflows for users who regularly move between spreadsheets and presentations, allowing Claude to maintain a single conversation across both applications.
Previously, users interacting with Claude through add-ins inside Excel or PowerPoint often had to copy information manually between tools or repeat prompts to maintain context. The latest update removes much of that friction. Claude can now keep track of the conversation across both programs, meaning users no longer need to re-enter the same instructions or paste data repeatedly.
With the updated integration, Claude can read data directly from Excel spreadsheets and use that information when generating content in PowerPoint. In practical terms, this means someone analyzing data in Excel could ask Claude to summarize key findings, generate charts, or create slide-ready explanations without manually transferring the information into a presentation.
Anthropic describes this as a shared context experience between the two applications. The AI assistant remembers the spreadsheet data and instructions provided earlier in the conversation, allowing users to continue the workflow inside PowerPoint without starting over. This approach reflects a broader shift in AI productivity tools toward persistent context across multiple apps.
One example offered by Anthropic involves financial analysts preparing reports. A user could ask Claude to examine financial data in Excel, extract relevant insights, and then build a structured PowerPoint presentation that explains those findings. Because the conversation persists across both applications, the process does not require switching tabs or re-uploading the same data multiple times.
Another major part of the update involves Claude Skills. These are reusable automated actions that can be saved within the Claude environment. When a particular workflow is repeated frequently, such as building a quarterly report or formatting financial summaries, it can be turned into a Skill that executes the process automatically.
Once saved, these Skills can be shared across an organization. Other team members can activate the same workflow with a single click instead of manually repeating each step. The goal is to standardize certain processes while reducing the learning curve for employees who may not be familiar with complex spreadsheet analysis or presentation formatting.
Anthropic is also introducing a set of preloaded starter Skills designed for common tasks inside Excel and PowerPoint. These built-in workflows cover typical office use cases such as summarizing spreadsheet data, building charts, generating slide outlines, and converting structured data into presentation-ready visuals.
The deeper integration reflects the growing competition among AI assistants in workplace software. Tools from several companies are increasingly being embedded directly inside productivity platforms rather than accessed separately through standalone chat interfaces. By embedding AI into everyday software like Excel and PowerPoint, developers aim to reduce the number of steps required to move from raw data to finished documents.
Anthropic’s approach focuses on maintaining conversational continuity between apps and allowing automated workflows to be reused across teams. This aligns with a broader industry trend where AI tools are expected to function more like integrated assistants than separate applications.
The shared context experience and Claude Skills integration are available now for users on paid Claude plans. The update is rolling out to both macOS and Windows versions of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint through the Claude add-ins.
