ChatGPT sees 2.5 billion prompts daily, as OpenAI reveals scope of global usage

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has reached a staggering level of daily engagement, with users submitting more than 2.5 billion prompts each day, according to new figures shared by the company. The data—disclosed in advance of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C.—offers a rare glimpse into the true scale of the AI chatbot’s global footprint.

The prompt count significantly exceeds earlier assumptions. While a billion daily interactions might have seemed ambitious, OpenAI’s reported volume is more than double that, with 330 million of those daily prompts coming from U.S. users alone, Axios reports.

So, how many people are actually using ChatGPT?

While OpenAI hasn’t released updated daily user numbers, the company has stated that 500 million people use ChatGPT weekly, as of April 2025. Independent analytics firms support the claim of ChatGPT’s massive reach: according to SEMRush, the site was the fifth most visited website in the world in May 2025, generating 4.6 billion visits in that month alone. Additionally, Backlinko reports that ChatGPT dominates the AI tool market, holding 62.5% of global market share, with around 10 million paid subscribers.

Despite the presence of a subscription tier, most users access the free version of ChatGPT—something OpenAI has acknowledged. The free model continues to drive the majority of prompt volume, signaling the platform’s widespread accessibility and utility across demographics.

Since its public debut, ChatGPT has fundamentally altered how millions seek information. For many users, the chatbot now functions as a primary search tool, often replacing traditional engines like Google. This shift has sparked concern across the digital publishing industry. Reports from The Economist and The Wall Street Journal have warned that AI chatbots are disrupting web traffic patterns and undermining ad-based publishing models. Some outlets have described this moment as an “AI Armageddon,” pointing to a steep decline in referral traffic as users increasingly bypass websites in favor of instant AI answers.

Whether viewed as a groundbreaking utility or a disruptive force in online media, ChatGPT’s reach is undeniable. As OpenAI continues to scale and refine its offerings, its chatbot remains at the center of the ongoing conversation about the future of information, technology, and the web itself.
