ChatGPT Plus & Teams get OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode

OpenAI has taken a significant step forward in enhancing the interactive experience of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by rolling out an advanced voice feature to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers. This exciting update introduces several new voices and customization options, enabling more natural and personalized conversational exchanges with the AI.

Back in May, OpenAI had offered a glimpse of this enhanced voice mode, powered by its cutting-edge GPT-4o language model. The demonstration showcased the impressive capabilities of this feature, with the AI generating remarkably natural-sounding voices. However, the initial demonstration also sparked controversy, with actress Scarlett Johansson alleging the unauthorized use of her voice for one of the AI-generated voices.

Following the controversy, OpenAI halted the rollout of the specific voice in question. In July, a limited group of ChatGPT Plus users had the opportunity to participate in an alpha test of the Advanced Voice feature. Now, after months of fine-tuning and development, OpenAI is finally ready to bring this advanced functionality to a wider audience.

One of the most notable changes in this update is the redesigned interface for the Advanced Voice feature. The previous series of black dots has been replaced with a more intuitive single blue circle. Additionally, five new voices have been added to the existing repertoire, including three female voices (Vale, Maple, and Sol) and two male voices (Spruce and Arbor). These diverse voice options provide users with a wider range of choices for their AI interactions.

OpenAI has also introduced a new setting called “Custom Instructions,” which allows users to personalize the behavior of the Advanced Voice feature. Furthermore, the update includes significant improvements to conversational speed, smoothness, and accents in select foreign languages, further enhancing the naturalness and fluidity of AI interactions.

While the Advanced Voice feature is being rolled out to a wider audience, it’s important to note that it remains unavailable in certain regions, including the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. OpenAI has not yet provided a timeline for when the feature might become available in these locations.

This update represents a major advancement in the development of conversational AI. OpenAI’s continuous efforts to refine the voice capabilities of ChatGPT demonstrate the company’s dedication to creating AI tools that are increasingly versatile and accessible.

As AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more sophisticated and natural-sounding voices to become available in the near future. This will undoubtedly unlock a plethora of new possibilities for AI interactions, further blurring the lines between human and machine communication.
