OpenAI’s groundbreaking conversational AI, ChatGPT, is making a major shift towards greater accessibility. Until recently, using ChatGPT required creating an OpenAI account. Now, anyone can interact with the chatbot without the need for registration.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI announced that this free access is being rolled out gradually. Depending on your location, you might still need an account for a little while longer. The company’s primary goal with this change is to make AI exploration more readily available to everyone who expresses interest.
Important Considerations
OpenAI does note some limitations to this free version of ChatGPT. Increased guardrails mean that certain text prompts might be blocked to ensure responsible use of the AI.
Users who want a more personalized and feature-rich experience can still opt to create a free OpenAI account. Benefits include:
- Saving and reviewing chat history
- Sharing chats with others
- Unlocking additional features like voice conversations and custom instructions
Privacy and Data Use
OpenAI states that content typed into the free version of ChatGPT might be used to further train its language models. However, users with or without an account can easily protect their privacy. Simply navigate to the Settings menu and toggle off the option labeled “Improve the model for everyone”.
ChatGPT’s Growing Reach, and Hints of an AI Supercomputer
In the same blog post, OpenAI shared that ChatGPT now boasts an impressive 100 million weekly users across 185 countries. Additionally, an unconfirmed report suggests a partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft to develop a powerful new AI supercomputer codenamed “Stargate”. This massive project, with an estimated budget of $100 billion, is projected for completion in 2028.
