OpenAI has quietly expanded the capabilities of its ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, adding a new audio transcription feature that offers a practical tool for professionals and everyday users alike. Available only to paid subscribers using GPT-4o—whether on a Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, or Team plan—the new “Record Mode” allows users to record and transcribe audio directly within the ChatGPT app.
Originally teased in an OpenAI update video from early June, Record Mode now offers desktop users a built-in method to capture voice input for transcription and summarization. The feature can be used for meetings, brainstorm sessions, interviews, or even spontaneous voice notes. The app captures both microphone and system audio, and then generates a transcript complete with a timestamped summary that appears directly in the chat window.
It’s a functionality that mirrors other long-standing AI transcription tools on the market, but for users already embedded in ChatGPT’s ecosystem, it offers added convenience with no additional software or services required. While it’s currently exclusive to macOS, there’s no version yet for Windows, Android, or the web.
OpenAI emphasizes that while the feature records up to 120 minutes of audio per session, it doesn’t store the original audio after transcription is complete. Instead, only the transcript is saved to a private canvas associated with the user’s account. This aligns with the company’s broader privacy policies, and the canvas system allows the assistant to reference past recordings for more contextually aware interactions in future chats.
That said, transcription data may still be used to improve model performance—but only if users have opted in. By default, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users are excluded from training data collection. Individual Plus and Pro users can opt out by disabling the “improve the model for everyone” setting. Workspace administrators can also disable Record Mode entirely via Workspace Controls.
One important caveat: users should be aware of local laws before recording. In many U.S. states and other regions, recording conversations without clear consent can be a legal violation. OpenAI advises informing participants when using the feature, especially in group or professional settings.
While the feature may seem like a modest addition, it signals OpenAI’s intent to position ChatGPT not just as a conversational assistant but as a productivity tool for real-world workflows. If future updates bring broader platform support and deeper integration with workspaces, Record Mode could become a core part of how users manage, document, and revisit their conversations.
