ChatGPT Agent launches on Mac app, bringing autonomous AI tools to the desktop

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent—a tool designed to carry out complex tasks autonomously—is now officially available on the ChatGPT Mac app. Following its debut on the web last week, the feature expands the capabilities of ChatGPT by blending autonomous browsing, data analysis, coding, and third-party integration within a native desktop environment.

Agent combines two core systems: Deep Research, which reads and interprets web content, and Operator, which performs action-based tasks such as clicking through sites, interacting with interfaces, and retrieving or uploading files from services like Google Drive, GitHub, and more. On macOS, users can access Agent by typing /agent or selecting the Agent button in the app interface. Once activated, the tool launches a task-focused visual workspace that updates in real time, allowing users to monitor and refine its decision-making process step by step.

The real-world applications for Agent are already diverse. In live demonstrations, the tool was tasked with planning a multi-day wedding itinerary, sourcing outfits, comparing hotel prices, and mapping sightseeing routes. In more productivity-focused use cases, Agent pulled structured data from a Google Drive folder, ran command-line operations in Terminal, and auto-generated a full presentation—complete with custom visuals—using OpenAI’s image model. In another test, it handled the early stages of a bulk sticker order, including navigating an e-commerce site and populating the cart, before handing control back to the user for final checkout.

While the technology is powerful, getting the most out of Agent takes some practice. OpenAI recommends thinking of it like a highly capable virtual assistant or intern: assign a task, step away, and return later to review results and fine-tune as needed.

ChatGPT Agent is currently available to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers. Monthly usage is capped at 400 tasks for Pro users, with 40 for Plus and Team accounts. OpenAI plans to expand access to Enterprise and Education subscribers by the end of July.

As the feature rolls out across platforms, it’s becoming increasingly clear that agentic AI may shift how users approach everything from daily admin to complex research workflows. Whether you’re planning events, automating reports, or just trying to save time, the ChatGPT Agent brings a hands-free approach to the Mac desktop—one task at a time.
