ChatGPT adds built-in Shazam music recognition feature

Song recognition from Shazam is now accessible directly inside ChatGPT, allowing users to identify music without leaving the chat interface. The integration brings Shazam’s music detection system into ChatGPT through a built-in feature that can recognize songs playing nearby and return the track title along with a preview.

The addition essentially mirrors the functionality people are familiar with from the standalone Shazam app. When a user types a prompt such as “Shazam, what is this song?”, ChatGPT can activate a “Tap to Shazam” interface that listens to the surrounding audio and attempts to identify the track. If a match is found, the system displays the song name and a short preview that can be played directly within the conversation.

This integration removes the need to switch between apps when trying to identify a track. Previously, users would typically open Shazam separately or rely on system-level shortcuts on certain devices. With the feature now embedded into ChatGPT, song recognition can happen as part of the same interaction where a user might also be discussing music, searching for lyrics, or asking for artist information.

Activating the feature requires a quick setup step within the ChatGPT settings menu. Users can navigate to the apps section, search for Shazam, and install the integration. After it is enabled, song recognition can be triggered by starting a prompt with the keyword “Shazam.” The system then initiates the listening interface needed to analyze nearby audio.

One notable detail is that the recognition feature does not require the standalone Shazam app to be installed on the device. The detection technology works independently inside ChatGPT, meaning it can function across multiple platforms where the chatbot is available.

However, if the Shazam app is already installed, the integration can sync with the existing Shazam ecosystem. Songs identified through ChatGPT can automatically be added to the user’s Shazam library, allowing them to revisit those tracks later within the main app.

Since its introduction, Shazam has been widely used as a quick way to identify music playing in public spaces, on the radio, or in videos. The service analyzes short audio samples and compares them to its database to find a matching track. The technology has remained largely the same since Apple acquired the service, but integrations like this reflect how music discovery tools are gradually moving into broader digital platforms.

Adding Shazam to ChatGPT also aligns with a wider shift toward combining AI assistants with third-party services. Instead of functioning purely as conversational tools, chatbots are increasingly becoming hubs where users can perform practical tasks such as searching for information, interacting with services, and identifying media.

For users who regularly use music recognition tools, the integration could simplify the process of discovering songs. Rather than opening a separate application, they can now identify a track while continuing the same conversation or task inside ChatGPT.
