CES 2024: Sony unveils mixed reality headset for professionals

Sony has unveiled a new VR/AR headset, deviating from its PlayStation VR 2 offering. This standalone mixed reality headset, developed in collaboration with Siemens, targets a distinct audience – specifically, engineers who are exploring options like the Apple Vision Pro.

Scheduled for release later in 2024, the headset is tailored for content creators and professionals. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip (also expected in Samsung’s upcoming headset), it incorporates Sony’s micro OLED displays, boasting an impressive 4K resolution per eye.

Diverging from traditional goggle-like designs, Sony’s headset features a flip-down design that positions the display technology above the eyes, providing peripheral vision on the sides. The visor can be easily flipped up for convenience.

In the wake of the Apple Vision Pro, high-end mixed reality headsets have garnered increased attention, and Sony’s entry aligns with this trend. The headset operates as a standalone device and relies on Siemens’ Xcelerator platform tools for business applications.

Primarily targeting areas previously addressed by AR headsets like Microsoft’s HoloLens, Sony’s headset seems poised for applications in modeling and exploring 3D designs, with potential uses in training and simulation. Noteworthy are the accessory offerings: a wearable ring and stylus-like pointer tool that can be used simultaneously, enabling users to manipulate and interact with 3D objects.
