Reports surfaced on Reddit and Twitter noting that prompts referencing Tibet, the Dalai Lama, or the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh produced a generic refusal message instructing users to try entering something else. The behavior quickly raised questions about whether the tool was applying content restrictions aligned with rules typically enforced within China, despite being used on global models.
In response, OnePlus issued a statement on its Community forum acknowledging what it described as a technical inconsistency within the Notes app’s AI Writer feature. According to the company, an internal investigation began shortly after the first reports appeared, with OnePlus attributing the censorship-like behavior to an underlying system issue rather than a deliberate policy choice. As a precaution, the company has temporarily removed access to the AI Writer while it works on a fix. OnePlus did not provide a specific timeline for restoring the tool.
The situation highlights how embedded AI features on smartphones can run into unexpected regional complexities. While devices sold in mainland China routinely implement local compliance filters, users in other markets generally expect tools such as AI text generation to respond consistently across topics, including those that may be politically sensitive.
