Casio goes Back to the Future with 40th anniversary calculator watch

Casio has gone back in time to celebrate one of cinema’s most beloved sci-fi classics. To mark the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future, the brand has released a special edition of the Casio Calculator Watch, immortalized by Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly in the 1985 blockbuster.

The Casio x Back to the Future edition reimagines the vintage digital watch with a futuristic, metallic twist. The resin case of the original has been replaced with a silver-toned metal body, giving it a more premium look and feel. Sitting above the digital display is the “OUTATIME” license plate — a direct nod to the DeLorean time machine — while the calculator buttons feature the same multi-colored numerals seen on the car’s time-travel display.

Flip the watch over, and you’ll find one of the coolest details: an engraved flux capacitor diagram on the case back, the very device that made 88 mph so legendary. The stainless steel bracelet adds to the watch’s retro-futuristic vibe, while the buckle houses another subtle detail — the Back to the Future logo, engraved on the inside of the clasp.

Even the packaging doubles down on nostalgia, arriving in a VHS-style box that looks straight out of a 1980s video rental store.

Priced at around US$153, this tribute piece costs more than its classic counterpart but delivers a heavy dose of movie magic and collector appeal.

For fans of both Casio and Back to the Future, it’s a stylish reminder that, as Doc Brown said, “your future is whatever you make it.”
