Canva’s AI push comes at a steep price: 300% subscription hike sparks backlash

Canva, the popular design software platform, is facing criticism after announcing a significant price increase for its Canva Teams subscriptions. The change, which affects global customers, has sparked debate about whether the company’s recent focus on generative AI features justifies such a steep price hike.

For some users, the cost of a Canva Teams subscription is set to jump by over 300%. In the US, some customers report their annual fee increasing from $120 for up to five users to a staggering $500. Even with a 40% discount for the first year, the new price point remains significantly higher. The price adjustments also impact users in other regions.

Canva attributes the price increase to the “expanded product experience” and value that its suite of generative AI tools has brought to the platform. In recent years, Canva has introduced a range of AI-powered features, such as the Magic Media text-to-image generator and Magic Expand background extension tool. These additions have broadened Canva’s appeal beyond design and marketing professionals, positioning it as a more versatile workspace.

However, the sudden and significant price hike has caught many users off guard. Some feel that Canva is abandoning its reputation as an affordable alternative to Adobe’s creative software suite. The backlash is evident online, with users expressing their frustration and some even announcing plans to switch to Adobe products.

The premium pricing strategy also comes on the heels of Canva’s acquisition of the company behind Affinity’s creative software suite and ahead of a potential public listing in the US. These moves suggest that Canva is undergoing a significant transformation, prioritizing revenue growth and expanding its product offerings.

While the addition of generative AI features has undoubtedly enhanced Canva’s capabilities, the question remains whether these improvements justify such a dramatic price increase. For many users, particularly small businesses and individuals, the new pricing structure may prove to be a barrier to entry. As Canva continues to evolve, it will be crucial for the company to strike a balance between innovation and affordability to retain its loyal user base.
