Canon has announced a set of firmware updates scheduled for release in July, targeting its professional PTZ camera lineup, RC-IP1000 controller, Cinema EOS and XF camcorders, and its Auto Tracking Application RA-AT001. While the updates are free, some enhancements to the Auto Tracking software will be offered as paid add-ons.
The RA-AT001 application will gain several features aimed at improving framing automation for PTZ setups. These include Multi-Person Framing, which maintains balanced composition when multiple subjects are in view; Face Direction Framing, which adjusts camera positioning based on the subject’s gaze to preserve visual spacing; and Sit/Stand Framing, which modifies zoom levels automatically as subjects sit or stand. These adjustments are aimed at environments such as live events, talk shows, and educational content.
PTZ cameras themselves will receive firmware that adds automatic reconnection for RTMP/SRT streaming in the event of network interruptions, and an option to reduce frame rates for web-based live feeds. The latter could prove useful in bandwidth-constrained settings.
Canon is also extending the capabilities of its Multi-Camera Control App for iOS devices. The app will now support control over PTZ cameras, including Pan/Tilt adjustments, preset management, zoom functions via pinch gestures, and toggling auto tracking on or off. This brings a more mobile-friendly option for managing camera systems, particularly in dynamic production environments.
The RC-IP1000 controller is set to receive notable usability upgrades. These include serial communication support for PTZ control, the ability to register camera presets via a long press on the touch panel, and a revised interface with larger preset thumbnails for easier navigation.
For users in virtual production and cinema workflows, Canon is updating its Cinema EOS and XF camcorders to better support Unreal Engine, now allowing multiple computer connections simultaneously. Additionally, these cameras will be able to play back RAW video with digital lens corrections applied, and offer improved customization for on-screen displays.
These updates reflect Canon’s ongoing push to improve workflow integration and remote camera management across a range of production use cases.
