BMW has unveiled its next-generation iDrive system at CES 2025, introducing a panoramic vision for the future of driver-vehicle interaction. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive, set to debut in the Neue Klasse vehicles in late 2025, reimagines the driving experience with a focus on personalization, intuitive controls, and advanced display technology.
A Driver-Focused Cockpit
The BMW Panoramic iDrive features four key components:
- BMW Panoramic Vision: This innovative system projects information across the entire width of the windscreen, providing a comprehensive and customizable display for both the driver and passengers.
- Central Display: Positioned ergonomically next to the steering wheel, the free-cut Central Display utilizes Matrix Backlight technology for optimal visibility in all lighting conditions.
- Multifunction Steering Wheel: The new steering wheel incorporates haptic feedback for intuitive control and enhanced driver engagement.
- BMW 3D Head-Up Display (Optional): This advanced head-up display projects navigation and assisted driving information directly into the driver’s field of view, providing a broader overview and enhancing situational awareness.
Enhanced Personalization
BMW Panoramic iDrive takes personalization to a new level. Drivers can customize driving characteristics, upload personal photos, and adjust the color schemes of the Ambient Light and Central Display. The “HypersonX” sound experience, developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio, adds another layer of personalization with a multi-dimensional sound spectrum that adapts to the driving situation.
BMW Operating System X: The Brains Behind the Beauty
The new iDrive system is powered by the BMW Operating System X, an advanced infotainment software developed entirely in-house by BMW. Based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack, this operating system enables seamless control of the various iDrive components and ensures drivers receive the right information at the right time.
Seamless Third-Party Integration
While developed in-house, BMW Operating System X remains open to third-party content, allowing for the integration of streaming services, gaming platforms, and other infotainment offerings.
The Future of BMW iDrive
The BMW Panoramic iDrive represents a significant evolution of BMW’s renowned driver-vehicle interface. With its focus on driver orientation, personalized experiences, and advanced display technology, the new iDrive sets a new standard for intuitive and engaging in-car interactions.
