Bluesky DMs arrive: a new way to chat, but hold your secrets

Bluesky, the up-and-coming Twitter/X rival, has finally added direct messaging (DMs) to its repertoire, giving users another reason to ditch the bird app. However, while the feature is a welcome addition, it’s still a bit rough around the edges.

Currently, Bluesky DMs are limited to text and emojis, with no support for images or videos, and no group chats either. The company assures users that these features are in the pipeline for future updates.

Privacy-conscious users might raise an eyebrow, though. While Bluesky promises additional privacy and safety measures, including end-to-end encryption, it also admits that its moderators may access DMs in “rare cases” to investigate abuse. So, if you’re planning any top-secret conversations, you might want to stick to more secure messaging apps for now.

That said, you can still report unwanted DMs to Bluesky moderators, who will then have access to the reported messages and surrounding context.

Overall, Bluesky’s DMs are a step in the right direction, but it’s clear that the feature is still a work in progress. Whether it’s enough to lure users away from Twitter/X remains to be seen. But hey, at least you can now whisper sweet nothings to your fellow Bluesky pals without broadcasting them to the whole world.
