Data infrastructure startup Astronomer is trying to reframe a week of unwanted media attention with the help of a high-profile distraction: Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress and entrepreneur appears in a newly released video for the company, stepping in as a tongue-in-cheek “temporary spokesperson” following a corporate scandal that spilled far beyond the tech world.
The saga began at a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts, where Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot were seen dancing together on the venue’s “kiss cam.” The awkward moment went viral, largely due to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin quipping onstage, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” Both executives, reportedly married to other people, have since resigned from the company.
In a statement, Astronomer acknowledged the fallout: “Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.” The company also noted the irony of its sudden notoriety, writing, “While awareness of our company may have changed overnight, our product and our work for our customers have not.”
Now, with the dust still settling, Astronomer is leaning into the moment with a self-aware marketing video. Paltrow, known as much for her wellness brand Goop as for her acting, delivers a performance that walks a fine line between damage control and satire.
Speaking directly to camera, she introduces herself as a “very temporary” voice for the company’s 300-plus employees. She proceeds to deflect the implied scandal-related questions — shown only partially on-screen — while highlighting the company’s data automation tools. At one point, she expresses enthusiasm for the “newfound interest in data workflow automation,” a clear nod to the nature of Astronomer’s accidental rise in public awareness.
The video closes with a plug for the company’s upcoming conference and a promise to “return to what we do best,” a not-so-subtle attempt to redirect attention back to the company’s core business: helping organizations manage and scale data pipelines through tools like Apache Airflow.
While clever and well-produced, the campaign raises questions about whether humor and celebrity cameos are the right way to recover from a reputational hit involving leadership misconduct. It’s a balancing act: owning the moment without making light of internal accountability.
Regardless, Astronomer seems intent on moving forward, using the attention it never asked for to promote the technology it still hopes will define it.
