Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro is expected to deliver the most significant camera changes in recent years, according to multiple leaks and reports. While official details remain under wraps until the company’s September launch event, credible sources suggest that the new Pro model will introduce an upgraded telephoto lens capable of 8x optical zoom — a notable step up from the iPhone 16 Pro’s 5x zoom and a major leap from older Pro models that topped out at 2x or 3x.
The iPhone 17 Pro is also rumoured to feature a redesigned camera app aimed at advanced users, paired with a dedicated physical camera button on the device’s top edge for quick access to shooting modes and settings. Apple is reportedly prioritising professional‑grade video capabilities, with speculation pointing toward 8K recording support and the ability to capture footage simultaneously from both front and rear cameras — a feature previously limited to third‑party apps.
Front‑facing photography is also set for an upgrade. The TrueDepth camera, which has remained largely unchanged since 2020, could see a jump from 12MP to 24MP. This higher‑resolution sensor may not be exclusive to the Pro line, potentially appearing across the standard iPhone 17 range as well.
Hardware design changes are also expected. Leaked mockups suggest a wider camera bump stretching across the back of the device, replacing the compact square module used on recent models. Colour options for the iPhone 17 Pro are said to include dark blue, black, silver, and a new orange variant, while the base iPhone 17 is tipped to arrive in six lighter shades.
Beyond the camera, other rumoured enhancements include an aluminium frame, 12GB of RAM, faster wireless charging, and a custom Apple‑designed Wi‑Fi 7 chip — part of a broader push to bring in‑house wireless technology across Apple’s lineup by 2028. The Dynamic Island may also be slightly reduced in size for a more streamlined display.
If Apple follows its usual schedule, the iPhone 17 Pro is likely to be unveiled on September 9 or 10, with retail availability expected from September 19. For users focused on photography and videography, this generation appears to offer far more than an incremental update.
