Apple Watch Ultra 3 release set for fall after extended delay

After sitting out 2024, Apple is preparing to reintroduce its rugged smartwatch line with the Apple Watch Ultra 3, expected to arrive this fall. The device is likely to debut alongside the iPhone 17 and Apple Watch Series 11, according to a product timeline shared by analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities. If the projection holds, it will mark the first substantial update to the Ultra series in nearly two years.

Apple’s decision to skip a full Ultra refresh in 2024 drew some criticism, particularly as the only visible change was the introduction of a black titanium finish to the existing Ultra 2. The pause fueled speculation about whether the line was being quietly sidelined or simply in need of more development time. If recent reports are accurate, the latter seems more likely.

This year’s Ultra 3 may include features such as satellite connectivity and 5G support—additions that could help justify the longer product cycle and differentiate the device for users who rely on independent communication features in remote or off-grid scenarios. The potential shift toward more autonomous connectivity would align the Ultra more closely with the needs of outdoor adventurers, emergency responders, and global travelers.

Apple’s broader hardware outlook for 2025, as outlined in Pu’s report, also includes a possible launch of the long-rumored HomePad tablet, though his projection that AirPods Pro 3 will be delayed until 2026 runs contrary to some other industry estimates.

For those still using the first-generation Ultra or weighing whether to upgrade, the upcoming model could offer a more meaningful step forward than the typical incremental changes seen in annual updates. A longer development window may allow for improvements beyond just connectivity—potentially in battery performance, materials, or health tracking features.

With the Apple Watch Ultra 3 release date expected in September, users can likely anticipate more than just cosmetic tweaks. Whether the model lives up to its delayed timeline will depend on how much real-world utility these rumored features bring to the table.
