Apple updates MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max, boosting on-device AI

Apple has unveiled the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, positioning the update around higher AI throughput, faster storage, and expanded connectivity. The refreshed MacBook Pro lineup will be available for pre-order starting March 4, with retail availability beginning March 11 in 33 countries.

The headline change is the introduction of the M5 Pro and M5 Max system-on-chip designs. Built using what Apple calls a Fusion Architecture, the chips combine two dies into a single package to increase processing capacity. Both variants feature up to an 18-core CPU configuration, including six high-performance cores and 12 additional performance-focused cores aimed at multithreaded professional workloads.

On the graphics side, Apple has added a next-generation GPU architecture with a Neural Accelerator integrated into each core. The company claims up to four times faster AI performance compared to the previous generation and up to eight times faster AI processing when compared to M1 Pro and M1 Max systems. As with prior announcements, these figures are based on internal benchmarks conducted under specific configurations.

The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with bandwidth reaching 307GB/s, while the M5 Max scales up to 128GB with 614GB/s of memory bandwidth. The increased bandwidth is designed to support demanding workflows such as large language model processing, high-resolution video editing, and 3D rendering. Apple also cites gains in ray-traced gaming performance and faster rendering in applications such as DaVinci Resolve and Redshift.

Storage performance has also been upgraded. Apple states that the new MacBook Pro delivers up to 2x faster SSD read and write speeds, reaching up to 14.5GB/s in certain configurations. Base storage has been raised to 1TB for MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and 2TB for M5 Max configurations, reflecting the storage demands of professional users handling large datasets and 4K or 8K video projects.

Battery life remains a central selling point. Apple rates the new MacBook Pro models for up to 24 hours of battery life, depending on configuration and usage. Fast charging can deliver up to 50 percent capacity in around 30 minutes with a compatible 96W or higher USB-C power adapter. As with previous Apple silicon systems, performance is intended to remain consistent whether plugged in or running on battery.

The design language remains largely unchanged. Both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models retain the aluminum chassis available in space black and silver. The Liquid Retina XDR display supports up to 1600 nits peak HDR brightness and 1000 nits for SDR content, with a nano-texture option available. Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI with support for up to 8K output, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3, and support for multiple external displays—up to two with M5 Pro and up to four with M5 Max. Wireless connectivity is handled by Apple’s N1 chip, enabling Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

macOS Tahoe powers the new MacBook Pro lineup, introducing refinements to Spotlight, expanded Shortcuts capabilities, and deeper integration of Apple Intelligence features. Live Translation across Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app is part of the broader push toward on-device AI, though availability varies by language and region. Apple Intelligence remains in beta.

From an environmental standpoint, Apple says the MacBook Pro uses 45 percent recycled content, including recycled aluminum in the enclosure and recycled cobalt in the battery. The company continues to align new hardware launches with its 2030 carbon neutrality target.

In the UAE, pricing for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro starts at AED 9,299, while the 16-inch version begins at AED 11,499. M5 Max configurations start at AED 15,499 for the 14-inch model and AED 16,999 for the 16-inch model, with education pricing available. A separate 14-inch MacBook Pro with base M5 chip now starts with 1TB of storage at AED 7,199.

With this update, the MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max focuses less on design changes and more on scaling compute performance for AI-driven and media-heavy workflows, reinforcing its role as Apple’s primary laptop for developers, engineers, and creative professionals.
